HGC built Summit Country Day expansion in 11 weeks HGC Construction took on a big task to complete the $10 million expansion and renovation project at Summit Country Day School in Hyde Park, a suburb of Cincinnati, OH, in just 11 weeks. The project added a five-story, 11,000-square-foot east wing on the main building that will provide a large library reading room, more classroom space, room for the business office on the first floor, an art studio and a covered walkway between the main building and the Lower School. The project also created state-of-the-art science labs on the first and second floors of the west wing and main building and renovate a science lab, administrative offices and health clinic in the middle school. The addition added back space that was lost in a 2004 partial collapse at the school. This type of major renovation would typically take 9 to 12 months, but Summit wanted the project finished in one summer, so the HGC Construction team had to get creative. A great deal of planning took place long before panels were delivered to the site this week. HGC Construction has been working on the project for more than two years, said Adam Kuehne, Vice President of Management. “We looked at all the different ways to build a building,” Kuehne said. They determined the fastest way to build would be to use pre-cast walls and floors. To get 12 months of work finished in about 11 weeks, the team worked with Gates Precast to make 96 panels of walls and floors over the past couple of months. HGC will assemble the panels on site. One of the major challenges at the construction site was the management of manpower. There were 100 workers in addition to the five supervises, two superintendents, a foreman and two project managers from HGC. In the end, the Summit Country Day School addition was completed ahead of schedule and students returned to class without disruption on September 1st.
