Last night marked the return to the ice of the 2017 broomball champions, the HGC Hammers. With a light rain and 38 degree temperature, the weather seemed unseasonably warm after last week and thus the scene was set for the Hammers to take on new rivals, Team Hubba Bubba. With former employee, Laura Spicer (now working at Dalmatian Fire Equipment), once again in goal, the Hammers came out swinging (pun intended). Even so, the ill-prepared and noticeably intimidated, Team Hubba Bubba scored the first goal. Not to worry. We have some new talent to discuss. In the absence of recent ringers Ciborek, Strawman, and the Freemans, new stars were born. Joe Kremer quickly tied the game at one. Soon after, Drew Schneider neared hat trick territory with two incredible goals and many close calls. Elizabeth Kruetzkamp won face-off after face-off while Andrew Scheitlin went end to end, masterfully scoring and canceling enemy attempt after attempt. On top of that, Taylor Andrews landed an incredible one-timer goal- courtesy of a helmet deflection off Tyler Martin. We can safely say, it’s a good thing SSRG hasn’t voted to brexit (broomball-exit) as their contribution to the Hammers is vital. In the end, the Hammers concluded the season opener with a 4-2 win. Come out and cheer us on! The next game is Monday, 1/22 at 7:45 PM vs. Sonic Boom at Fountain Square. We hope to see you there! 2018 Schedule: Monday, January 22 @ 9:15 p.m. Monday, January 29 @ 9:45 p.m. Monday, January 29 @ 8:15 p.m. Monday, February 5 @ 6:45 p.m.
