This week was founded by National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), an organization advocating for women in the construction industry since 1953. The goal of WIC is stated to be “to highlight women as a viable component of the construction industry. WIC Week also provides an occasion for NAWIC’s thousands of members across the country to raise awareness of the opportunities available for women in the construction industry and to emphasize the growing role of women in the industry.”

Pride in a tangible product

Susan Hathaway, CFO

Portrait of Susan Hathaway with quoteQ: What is your favorite part of your career and why?
A: Every day is different. I get to work on profit enhancement, team development, legal matters, finance, and strategy. The variety is energizing!
Q: What advice would you give to a woman entering or thinking about joining the industry?
A: Be curious! Ask questions and go see the work. Really understand what the field goes through, learn the contractual facets of the job, and maintain a sense of humor – things are not going to go as planned but that doesn’t mean they won’t turn out well.
Q: What’s a perk about working in the construction industry that most people don’t know about?
A: There is a tangible product at the end of a job – your family stays at a hotel you helped build – you can have dinner at a restaurant your team helped to create.
Q: What makes you proud of your work and why?
A: I am so proud of the teams at our companies. The hoops they jump through to make our clients happy and the pride in their work. It really is such an amazing culture with an overriding commitment to excellence.

Serving the public at large

Prasanna Rudravajhala, Estimating Engineer

portrait of Prasanna Rudravajhala for Women in Construction Week 2021Q: What is your favorite part of your career and why?
A: Visualizing a building in 3D and coordinating with the various building services in 3D Construction platforms is the favorite part of my career. I enjoy visualizing the construction details and detecting clashes between the building services. It’s the problem-solving nature of the job that I like the most.
Q: What’s a perk about working in the construction industry that most people don’t know about?
A: Being in construction, we get entry into our job sites and areas that are not accessible to everyone. The thrill of getting to know about the functioning of the building excites me.
Q: What makes you proud of your work and why?
A: I always liked being part of a profession that is tangible and serves the public at large. Infrastructure like office buildings, banks, restaurants and so on are the crux of the society that we live in which enhance the day-to-day lives of people. It gives me immense satisfaction being a part of building it.
