At HGC Construction, we are proud of our collaborative and welcoming workplace culture. But we know that a lot of what makes our culture great is due to our incredible staff. Each month we highlight one member from our team. This month, get to know one of our newest team members, Kevin Schubert. Kevin is our new Director of Preconstruction, and comes to HGC with 20 years of experience in the industry.

WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY?

Love life and don’t allow people to roam in your head rent free.

WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

My parents inspire me. Been married for 48 years and together 55 years. Being around them is always a good time.

TELL US SOMETHING THAT MIGHT SURPRISE US ABOUT YOU.

I have two Harleys and try to ride somewhere every weekend, and I love to cook and try new foods from different cultures.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO ON YOUR DAYS OFF?

Rest, be outside, riding my motorcycles and shooting.

HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS?

If I can sleep at night knowing I did what I could to set myself and/or someone else up to win and be happy, then I consider myself successful.

WHAT HAS CHANGED THE MOST IN THE INDUSTRY ACROSS YOUR CAREER?

Culture and has changed the most. When I started over 20 years ago, the culture in the interaction between managers and staff seemed very destructive. Very hard to find quality labor force. Also technology makes everyone accessible all the time. This can be abused in this industry, as everything is someone’s emergency.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A NEW HIRE?

Listen as much as possible and accept as many roles as possible. Growing a diverse skill set is key. Network and build relationships with everyone you meet. This industry is built on relationships. This industry isn’t the easiest, but can be very rewarding.

FILL IN THE BLANK: I ONCE MET…

I once met Kenny Chesney in a bar at East Tennessee State University. I was dating a girl that was part of a bluegrass band at the university and he was there to watch. We switched buying drinks for each other the entire night. I had no clue who he was. Just thought he was a cool tiny guy who was somewhat normal in the hills of eastern Tennessee. I was told once my girlfriend came out from back stage.

WHAT WOULD BE THE TITLE OF YOUR AUTOBIOGRAPHY?

Ginger Snaps.
