EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: Jacob Reeves

Portrait of Jacob Reeves [1]At HGC Construction, we are proud of our collaborative and welcoming workplace culture [2]. But we know that a lot of what makes our culture great [3] is due to our incredible staff. Each month we highlight one member from our team. This month, get to know one of our Project Managers, Jacob Reeves. Jacob is nearing his one-year anniversary with HGC, and has been a part of several projects already including our work with Montgomery Community Church, and the renovation and expansion currently underway at Warren County Juvenile-Probate Court. [4]

WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY?

You cannot do anything to stop time; time is going to happen.  So, what you do now, today, and tomorrow with your time is going to have an impact on your future.  In other words, do not be afraid of pursuing higher education, training, certification, or whatever it may be, as the time is going to pass regardless.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF WORKING AT HGC?

We really are a one-stop-shop, especially as a group of companies, to deliver on a vast multitude of projects.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO FOR A CAREER IF YOU WEREN’T DOING THIS?

I honestly have no idea, but I do believe that it would still be something within the construction industry.  I love getting to be a part of a team environment and building every day.

TELL US SOMETHING THAT MIGHT SURPRISE US ABOUT YOU.

I drank a Sprite (I was under age) with Blake Shelton and his “first wife” on his tour bus in my hometown of Corbin, KY.  I’ve also met Craig Morgan, Chris Knight, and seen Kansas in Concert.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PROJECT THAT YOU’VE BEEN A PART OF?

At HGC, it is definitely Warren County Juvenile-Probate Court [4].  I’ve been a part of many courthouse projects in the past, so this is right up my alley.  And the Owners are absolutely fantastic.

In my career before HGC, I’d say University of Kentucky Coal Lodge, which is the dormitory for the UK Men’s basketball team.  I met many great college players who are now in the NBA, as well as many great former UK coaches.

WHAT HAS CHANGED THE MOST IN THE INDUSTRY ACROSS YOUR CAREER?

Project Management software.  When I stared 10+ years ago, nearly everything was Microsoft Excel, Word or Projects, and converted to PDF.  Now there are countless number of project management, scheduling and accounting software programs.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO ON YOUR DAYS OFF?

I have an amazing family which consists of a beautiful wife and two boys; a 3-year old and nearly a 1-year old.  We enjoy being outside every chance that we get.  My oldest and I especially like to look for deer antler sheds.

WHAT WOULD BE THE TITLE OF YOUR AUTOBIOGRAPHY?

Work hard, play hard.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A NEW HIRE?

Never settle; never stop learning.  This industry is ever-evolving (e.g. new technology, new equipment, new materials), and you’ll quickly fall behind if you don’t stay current with industry practices and standards.
