CANstruction 2019 – “We Think We CAN…Eliminate Hunger!”

[1]For the third year in a row, HGC participated in CANstruction [2], an international community service project in more than 170  participating cities. This year, we were honored to have our structure receive the Structural Ingenuity Award [3].

A vital part of the culture [4] at HGC Group of Companies [5] is building our community, and so we are proud to participate in this creative competition. Architects, engineers, designers, and contractors compete, designing and building large-scale structures constructed entirely out of canned and packaged foods. In 2019, total participation brought in 100,723 cans, bottles, boxes and bags of food, all going towards neighbors facing food insecurity.

This year, HGC and partner  M+A Architects were feeling a bit nostalgic. So we crafted a design that is a double throwback, combining Cincinnati’s early days of transportation with a classic children’s book. In this sculpture, the iconic Little Engine That Could [6] climbs bravely up the historic Cincinnati Incline [7], carrying “all sorts of good things for boys and girls to eat” to the other side of the mountain.

With the help of more than 10 volunteers from both HGC and M+A, we completed construction in an incredible five hours. And thanks to our community’s generous support, we raised more than $5,000 in donations to help us complete our goal.

The Cincinnati chapter of CANstruction benefits the Freestore Foodbank. [10] With the support of the design and construction industry, thousands of hungry people are fed, and greater awareness of issues surrounding hunger are brought to the public’s attention. CANstruction has grown to become one of the world’s largest drives for food bank donations.
