Employee Spotlight: John Neyer, P.E., LEED AP

Employee Spotlight

HGC Construction would not be the company it is today without its incredible staff. Each month we highlight one member from our team with a Q&A session.

John Neyer, P.E., LEED AP | Senior Project Manager

 WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY

John NeyerTreat others as you want to be treated. I have found that being fair gets a lot more than I would ever give up.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF WORKING AT HGC CONSTRUCTION?

Allowing me to take ownership of my work. There is no micromanaging. A big surprise to me when I joined HGC was how helpful everyone is. If you ask for help someone is always willing to jump in and help.

ACROSS YOUR CAREER, WHAT HAS CHANGED THE MOST IN THE INDUSTRY?

Electronics. I remember the days of typing a letter, making a mistake, and then starting over. You really had to think about what you are doing. Now computers, spell check, auto correct make life easier but you need to take the effort to proofread.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO ON YOUR DAYS OFF?

The more free time I have the more items I have to do. Tina and I are involved in a lot of items and support each other’s activities. When we actually have a night off we usually get together with friends to catchup.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO (FOR A CAREER) IF YOU WEREN’T DOING THIS?

I have no idea. I grew up in the construction industry and have enjoyed it my entire career. When I finally retire I see myself following in my father’s footsteps volunteering for a nonprofit handing construction and/or maintenance.

TELL US SOMETHING THAT MIGHT SURPRISE US ABOUT YOU.

Tina and I competed in ballroom dancing for a few years. This was before Dancing with the Stars started. It was fun and challenging. I found that when I took a lesson all my challenges of the day were forgotten for a short period of time.

OF WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD?

Our children. We have six children who are all living on their own in the career of their choice. With 2 grandchildren we are excited when we have family time.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A NEW HIRE?

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. I tell all newbies that I never want someone to invent the wheel but rather to make it rounder.
