Employee Spotlight HGC Construction would not be the company it is today without its incredible staff. Each month we highlight one member from our team with a Q&A session. Venita Taylor, Administrative Assistant WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY One personal philosophy is “a teacher is always a student.” When I was teaching in the art of dance expressions, I would learn from my students. “Once a person closes the door of learning, there is no room for growth.” Another personal philosophy of mine “try to do what is right even if no one else is in view.” WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF WORKING AT HGC CONSTRUCTION? I would have to say my favorite aspect of working at HGC is having knowledge and experience of working in the field and in the office. I started in the field as a Laborer, then Apprentice Carpenter, now Administrative Assistant. ACROSS YOUR CAREER, WHAT HAS CHANGED THE MOST IN THE INDUSTRY? When I started working at HGC Construction, there must have been 30 employees in the field and office combined. Now nearly 14 years later, we are a Group of (3) Companies with over 300 employees. Then, no titles followed names we just worked to get the job done. Those with longevity, construction knowledge and many years of experience ran the projects. We had a dumpster parked in the main parking lot that we transported non-hazardous materials from the job site to this dumpster. Now dumpsters roll in and out of our job sites daily. Today we are very diverse in every aspect of the company. WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO ON YOUR DAYS OFF? I love spending time with my family, cherishing the moments. I love to sing gospel. I participate in various Community, State, and National Choirs. Walnut Hills will have another Feed the Hungry Concert this year. Donations of can goods and non-perishable items will contribute to those in need. WHAT WOULD YOU DO (FOR A CAREER) IF YOU WEREN’T DOING THIS? Writer/Director of short plays and Choreographer. TELL US SOMETHING THAT MIGHT SURPRISE US ABOUT YOU. When I was in the 5th grade, I would stay after school 2 days a week tutoring math to disabled children. OF WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD? I thank The Lord that I have parents that instilled in me values of life that I did not understand then but have a great appreciation for and are very meaningful to me now. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A NEW HIRE? Be yourself. No two people are alike. Work hard, safe, and smart. Ask questions. Understand your tasks do not just jump in there. Always look for ways of improvement. Value your time. Begin with the end in mind.
