Employee Spotlight: Travis Richey

Employee Spotlight

HGC Construction would not be the company it is today without its incredible staff. Each month we highlight one member from our team with a Q&A session.

Travis Richey,  Superintendent II

WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY

Employee Spotlight: Travis Richey

My personal philosophy on work is push, push, push! Schedules are tight and I believe if you can look at the schedule and find ways to move ahead, do it! “If you can get it, get it!” If you don’t it could turn around to bite you!  That, as well as always have a backup plan…and then a backup plan to the backup plan. In construction, the unexpected should be expected, and when turning a project over early is the end goal, you have to be ready for any and everything!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF WORKING AT HGC CONSTRUCTION?

I thoroughly enjoy the work that I do and HGC is a company that really seems to value that. They strive to make the company as a whole an enjoyable place to work, and I enjoy being a part of something that truly appreciates me and the other members of our team.

ACROSS YOUR CAREER, WHAT HAS CHANGED THE MOST IN THE INDUSTRY?

For me, the way you work with subcontractors has changed the most. You really have to get to know each subcontractor and tailor your interactions to the needs of each specific one. Some need words of encouragement to get that push to finish, while others need strict schedule reminders.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO ON YOUR DAYS OFF?

What days off?! I normally end up working on my property and spending the rest of the time with my family. I have a great support team at home and want to give them as much time as I can.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO (FOR A CAREER) IF YOU WEREN’T DOING THIS?

If I weren’t doing this, I would have a career as a firefighter.

TELL US SOMETHING THAT MIGHT SURPRISE US ABOUT YOU.

It might surprise people that I do have a life outside of work, even though I work 60-70 hours a week. I do know how to enjoy my occasional free time.

OF WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD?

Definitely my family. My family is what motivates me and makes it possible for me to travel and give as much time to work as I do. With two kids in elementary school and a newborn, life gets chaotic, and I’m so lucky to have such an amazing support system to hold down the fort.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A NEW HIRE?

My advice to a new hire at HGC would be to work hard, take in as much as possible from as many people as you can, and then develop your own personal way of getting things done. What works for one person, might not work for another. Be your own person, but also be willing to learn from those around you.
