HGC Partners with Casto on The Barrett Apartments

Barrett School apartment exterior

In Spring of 2017, HGC Construction had the opportunity to work with Casto [1] on the renovation of the former Barrett School in Columbus, Ohio. The 117-year-old building has been converted into 51 apartments while still preserving its roots – right down to the lockers in the hallways and chalkboards in the units.

HGC Construction partnered with Casto and AR Designs [2] to install 261 historic windows throughout the building. All windows in the building were replaced with new aluminum windows crafted in the original design. The height of the windows ranged from 12 feet to 20 feet tall and some less than 5 feet wide.

The availability of historic preservation tax credits from the state made the Barrett project possible. Designing windows to match the original triple hung windows was paramount to the success of this project. AR Designs teamed with Graham Windows [3] to design a solution that mimicked the design and function of the building’s original windows. Matching the sightlines, configurations and operation of the existing window was critical.

Due to the variety of options available from Graham and the extensive knowledge of historic windows from the HGC Construction and AR Design team, HGC was able to install the 261 replicated windows into the Barrett Apartments, giving it the commanding historic appeal it has today.
